Roskomnadzor Russian Media Censorship Agency Russia Hacked Anonymous Dark Web

According to recent reports, an affiliate of Anonymous has infiltrated a Russian media censoring agency called Roskomnadzor. The discussions lead to the confirmation that the member of the Anonymous hacktivist group shared more than 800GB worth of Roskomnadzor data.

Roskomnadzor is a federal service for communication, information technology, and mass media based in Russia. It is a perfect target for the hacktivist group since the hacking group recently said they side with Ukraine in the current geopolitical conflict. Moreover, Anonymous claims that they have stolen around 360,000 files from the principal Russian federal agency.

Experts believe that Anonymous hacked Roskomnadzor since it is the Russian agency responsible for assessing, evaluating, controlling, and censoring Russian news and media that banned Telegram, email services, and VPNs.

The overall number of the leaked database is approximately 820 gigabytes, with most of the stolen files belonging to Roskomnadzor’s data in charge with one of Russia’s biggest provinces called Bashkortostan.

The entire leaked dataset is currently available on the official website called DDoSecrets, which is a non-profit whistleblower group. However, researchers noted that the organisation did not contribute to any effort made by Anonymous during the hack on Roskomnadzor.

Roskomnadzor became the ideal target for Anonymous.

The Russian government has obstructed all sources of information by utilising their censoring media group, Roskomnadzor. The country has also blocked Twitter, Facebook, Reddit, and more online platforms that can jeopardise their entire operation in Ukraine. Hence, Anonymous targeted Roskomnadzor to release some of the restrictions made by Russia.

Since Russia has declared its interest in claiming Ukraine, the hacktivist group has publicly sided with the latter country.

Moreover, Anonymous expressed their sympathy with Ukraine by waging a cyberwar against Russia on the exact date its government deployed the Russian soldier. The threat group has recently blocked the Russian Defence Ministry website and leaked its workforce’s data online.

Earlier this month, Anonymous also infiltrated some Russian state TV channels and a Netflix wannabe streaming platform. After hacking these video-playing platforms, the group aired pro-Ukrainian messages while portraying the injustices caused by the Russian military.

The Anonymous hacktivist group has publicly expressed its intention of aiding Ukraine with this current geopolitical conflict. Experts believe that the hacking of Russian entities will not stop anytime soon.
