The Scottish Association for Mental Health (SAMH) in Scotland recently disclosed a ransomware attack against their institution conducted by the RansomEXX group. The attack campaign resulted in the leakage of the institution’s sensitive data on the internet.

According to a chief executive of SAMH, their institution is devastated by the attack. They cannot understand why someone would intentionally disrupt their workflow since they have patients who heavily rely on them and are very vulnerable.

SAMH aids everyone in providing care and support for all ages that suffer from mental health issues. The institution also conducts campaigns to influence positive social change.

The RansomEXX ransomware group can be considered a heartless group of hackers since they have published 12GB of data stolen from the Scottish mental health charity on the dark web.

The RansomEXX ransomware gang has published critical information about numerous individuals. The group has not considered whether the charity can pay enough to retrieve the stolen data.

Based on reports, the RansomEXX group has published several personal information, such as photographs of driver’s licenses and passports. The group also included the home addresses of the affected individuals and their passwords and credit card details.

SAMH’s chief executive stated that their charity would continue to support everyone with mental health issues despite the problems caused by the hackers; and also explained that their main priority is to continue to do everything they can to deliver their essential services.

The SAMH representative then elaborated that the RansomEXX gang will not receive any ransom from their charity since they do not have the means to spend money on extortionists.

The institution wishes for the ransomware group to give up the decryption keys so they can retrieve their systems and permanently delete the information they have stolen from their charity.

The chief executive requested the group to hear their demands and return all the stolen files if they had an ounce of decency among their group members.
