The Fort Summer Municipal Schools in New Mexico in Ohio are currently experiencing cyberattacks from threat actors. Based on reports, the leak site of the notorious Cl0p ransomware group showed critical information about the school’s faculty members, students, and guardians. The leak displayed countless identifications, especially driver’s licenses.

According to the school’s spokesperson, they are having an ongoing investigation regarding the cybersecurity threat that affects their servers. The representative also noted that they are currently engaged with a cyber-counterintelligence expert to negotiate and maintain the privacy of the affected data.

Unfortunately, the malicious threat group has already released some stolen information.

The Ohio cyberattack incident has impacted several sectors exposed to the internet.

Last week, the Washington Local Schools published a statement on Twitter saying that the cyberattack has affected the emails, WiFi networks, internet, phones, and Google Classroom systems of the academia.

The district spokesperson did not respond to any requests for comment from other concerned entities. However, the school said that they hired a cyber forensic team to aid them with the investigation and help them recover their information. There was no additional detail regarding the origin and the cause of the attack or the suspected group.

The district then added that concerned people should understand that their personnel do not have access to today’s outgoing or incoming calls or messages. But there will still be an emergency phone call for each affected school in the district that the schools will disseminate via mail.

Some reports said the schools and investigators are just starting to learn about the attack. They also announced that the seniors will still have a smooth examination process and make their final days in the academy memorable.

Separate cybersecurity analysts highlighted at least ten US school districts, with more than 230 schools being targeted by ransomware each quarter. The number of impacted schools may not be high, but it is still alarming since about 21 academic institutions were affected by a cyberattack last year.
