A Malaysian hacktivist group called Dragon Force gathers other hackers’ attention to encourage them to attack India’s information technology infrastructure with cyber-attacks. Last June, the group tweeted its intention and called its mission a “special operation.”

The hacktivist group appears to be targeting the members of the Bharatiya Janata Party, a political party in India. They have been eyeing this Indian party as two members have negatively judged their religion Islam and its deity Prophet Muhammad. One of the members has already been suspended, and the other has been expelled.

Cybersecurity experts noted that the hacktivist groups, such as Dragon Force, will undoubtedly seek to utilise cyberattacks for protesting and raising awareness of any party deemed abusive of its powers. Few individuals also compare them to one of the most well-known hacktivist groups, Anonymous.

The Dragon Force hacktivist group has already made several campaigns against India.

Since they tweeted their cause last couple of months, Dragon Force has begun their attacks and posted several instances of what they claim to be an activity caused by them. The company claimed it had taken down some of India’s popular web hosting companies.

One of the companies affected is Hostnet, which paved the way for another set of companies’ websites to be taken down.

These websites include Nagpur’s Educational institution, Institute of Science, and organisations. These websites were compromised and replaced by the hacker group with their message. The educational institution has since shut down and is unavailable.

The Dragon Force hacktivist group also announced on Twitter that they own a database containing details of the members of the Indian government. However, the email addresses enumerated on the purported databases seem to include personal addresses with no official government authentication.

City police had cyber inspected then stated that more similar incidents have been reported in their department after the Dragon Force encouraged other hackers to target India with cyberattacks.

Moreover, a Singapore-based cybersecurity firm indicated that the Indian government should address this Dragon Force issue seriously since it can cause catastrophic damages if left unattended.
