Rockstar Games Hacked Data Leak GTA 6 Source Code Dark Web Gaming US

An unidentified threat actor who successfully conducted a Rockstar games hack has exposed the gameplay videos and source code of the sixth franchise of the long-time hit video game series Grand Theft Auto (GTA).

The hackers had infiltrated Rockstar Game’s Confluence wiki and Slack servers. They initially exposed the gameplay videos and source code on GTAForums last weekend, where a malicious entity with a handle named ‘teapotuberhacker’ published a link to a RAR file containing about 90 stolen videos.

The sample videos seem to be made by the developers debugging several features in GTA, such as NPC tracking, locations in Vice City, and camera angles. Additionally, a few of the stolen videos contained voice conversations between the other NPCs and the protagonist.

The threat actors revealed that they had stolen essential assets in the game to extort Rockstar Games.

The actor claimed it had orchestrated the Rockstar Games hack for extortion purposes. The hacker claimed it had stolen more GTA 5 and GTA 6 assets and tested the building to be exposed if Rockstar games did not provide its demands.

Furthermore, the threat actor announced that it accepts bids that start with $10,000 for the GTA 5 source code and assets, but GTA 6 is not included.

However, the members of the GTA-exclusive forum showed hesitance toward the authenticity of the hack. This hesitation pushed the threat actors to show more proof by claiming that they are also the culprit behind the latest cyberattacks against Uber and the source of the leaked screenshots of source code from the two latest iterations of Grand Theft Auto.

The Rockstar Games have not admitted to any of the allegations now. Still, researchers confirmed that the leak was authentic after proving it to a reliable source inside the game developer.

The leak of GTA videos has circulated on different platforms such as Twitter and YouTube. Rockstar Games has also made its moves by issuing DMCA infringement notices, and copyright claims to take down the leaked videos.

Unfortunately, the game developer’s actions were a tad bit too late since the threat actors had already initiated the leak of the stolen GTA 6 videos and parts of its source code on Telegram. Our researchers will keep an eye out for developments on this issue and publish updates as they become available.
