A cybersecurity conference conducted by Australia’s Institute of Company Directors (AICD) was compromised by a cybercriminal attack. The conference’s objective was to address the current cybercriminal events in Australia.

The data breach event in Medibank and Optus has sparked concerns among leaders and high-profile personalities. The AICD also had some solid names expressing their support for launching new cybersecurity governance principles.

However, the conference encountered problems after a hack occurred in the platform that hosted the meeting. The officer in charge of the forum and the LinkedIn platform also experienced PR issues.

The attack affected the potential participants of the conference after most of them failed to log onto the platform before the event started. Most of them became anxious, and the cybersecurity conference did not go live on schedule.

The alleged hack in the AICD disseminated malicious links to the participants.

The AICD participants have received a fake Eventbrite link while waiting to log onto the event. Unfortunately, numerous unsuspecting users have clicked the malicious link. Based on reports, the phoney link requested the users to provide their credit card details, resulting in the event organiser pleading with participants not to attempt to use any links attached in the chat.

Furthermore, another set of malicious links impersonating AICD appeared after the first batch. Some users were still fooled by the attacks and tried to follow all the instructions inside the second fake link.

The deceived users complained that the link did not work correctly, which is out of control for the organisers as they are baited to access the malicious site. Eventually, the officers in charge decided to cancel the event after the debacle reached about half an hour.

The organiser released a statement after the cancelled event that it was unclear what credit card details had been transferred over by the unsuspecting victims to the hackers. Therefore, the participants were urged to contact their credit card providers regarding the issue.

AICD apologised sincerely for the unfortunate circumstances that happened in the LinkedIn live event.
