The Killnet hacking group has attempted several distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks on the former Eastern Bloc government but has been unsuccessful. The pro-Kremlin group completely botched the attempted attacks as they failed to keep their target’s websites shut down with their operation.

According to researchers, the threat group has targeted government agencies and companies that oppose the Russian government yet expressed their support for Ukraine. These attacks have been going on for months, impacting the services of numerous countries such as Bulgaria, Estonia, Moldova, Poland, and Romania.

Fortunately, the attacks from the Killnet group have been short of what a DDoS campaign is supposed to be since many targeted websites have functioned smoothly after the impact.

The Bulgarian interior minister dismissed the effect of Killnet’s attacks, stating that it was only an image attack to create tension among those who criticise Russia. In addition, the minister reminded the people that the website for the European Union member and NATO’s intelligence agency was not affiliated with their operational IT services.

Bulgaria’s prosecutor-general has also disclosed that Killnet was the threat group behind the massive cybersecurity attack against their government’s websites last month.

The Killnet hacking group admitted that their attacks were their sanction to countries who betrayed Russia.

Russia’s Killnet group has shown massive improvement in their capabilities since their emergence earlier this year. Researchers said that the group has yet to reveal their tactics but showed signs of sophistication as they target high-priority websites and organisations.

As of now, experts stated that these attacks from the Killnet group have no lasting effect. Its operators only execute these attacks to gather media attention and incite chaos. The FBI also shared that they are aware of the Pro-Russian hacktivist group’s attempted DDoS attacks to target critical infrastructure with limited success.

According to the authorities, the current DDoS campaigns do not require any follow-up intrusion. The hacktivist wants to create a storyline in which Russia has massive plans for those who oppose them. Hacktivists usually spread the news with exaggerated content to create panic among users.
