Pepsi Bottling Distributor Malware Cybercrime Cyberattack Hacked Data Theft System Breach

An info-stealing malware had reportedly caused damage to the networks of Pepsi Bottling Ventures LLC, the beverage company’s largest product distributor, injected by unknown hackers. The incident occurred last December 23 and resulted in data theft from the company’s IT systems.

Based on the company’s report, they only discovered unauthorised access in its systems last January 10, which has given the malicious actors 18 days to complete their attack. The company added that their remediation process has been slow since the discovery due to the hackers installing malware and pilfering critical company data during their access.

The last known access activity from the hackers was on January 19. The bottling distributor said they are taking prompt action to mitigate and secure the affected systems.

A multitude of confidential information from Pepsi’s bottling distributor has been compromised.

In the report released by Pepsi Bottling Ventures LLC, their investigations showed that the compromised company data in the hack included full names, residential addresses, financial credentials (PINs, passwords, and access numbers), government-issued IDs, Social Security numbers, passport data, digital signatures, driver’s license numbers, and health and insurance information.

However, the individuals involved in the breach have yet to be disclosed by the company – including whether they are customers or employees. Pepsi Bottling Ventures LLC have also not revealed the number of people affected.

The company applied enhanced network security measures to ensure that similar incidents would not reoccur. The passwords of the employees’ corporate accounts have also been reset, and relevant authorities have been reached out.

A part of the company’s incident response is suspending regular operations on systems affected by the incident while the investigations are underway.

Furthermore, to help individuals affected by the security breach, the bottling distributor offered them a year of free identity monitoring services via ‘Kroll.’ This service will help them prevent being a victim of identity theft since the hackers have stolen personal information from the affected people.

As of now, the company have yet to share more details about the incident.
