Dish Network temporarily shuts down after an alleged cyberattack

One of the US’ biggest television companies, Dish Network, has suddenly shut down its websites and applications for more than 24 hours. Based on the report, the unannounced shutdown impacted Dish[.]com, Dish Anywhere app, and several websites and networks under the supervision of the corporation.

Numerous customers also reported that the company’s call centre phone numbers are out of coverage. Additionally, some users faced an authentication problem when signing into TV channel applications like MTV & Starz.

The TV network’s remote employees have also suffered the effects of the sudden interruption as they have been cut off from logging into their work systems.

 

The website, apps, and phones from Dish Network became inaccessible after the alleged attack.

 

According to investigations, DishWireless[.]com, Dish Anywhere, Dish[.]com experienced a massive outage after the Dish Network suffered a cybersecurity issue. The incident caused inconvenience to many users since they could not stream using their apps. Some customers stated they had trouble paying their bills or contacting the company’s customer support.

The company’s Twitter support account, Dish Answers, explained that an internal systems issue affected their customer service operations. The Twitter post also stated that Dish Network has already deployed its security team to address the issue.

The company also disclosed that the remote employees could not connect to their VPN. Hence, the issue disrupted the workflow from outside of the company.

The employees within the company claimed that an alleged cyberattack caused the sudden interruption. Some employees believed it was the cause since they saw blank icons on their company devices, which commonly occurs after a ransomware attack.

An employee confirmed the rumours regarding the cyberattack. They have already received a message from their manager revealing that the incident was an activity from a well-known threat actor.

The company has yet to discover the initial entry point of the threat actors that breached their systems and have employed a third-party security team to aid them in resolving the situation.
