The NoName057(16) hacker group is a notorious pro-Russian cybercriminal organisation conducting distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks against Ukraine and NATO-affiliated countries. The group currently targets critical infrastructure and government organisations even before the geopolitical conflict between Russia and Ukraine started.

According to researchers, the group used public Telegram channels and a multi-operating system toolkit to conduct its DDoS attack against earlier-mentioned entities. The group is also actively present on GitHub.

The NoName057(16) hacker group is an alleged hacktivist that aids Russia.

Based on reports, the NoName057(16) hacker group focuses on disrupting websites that could benefit Russia’s interest against Ukraine. They use distributed denial-of-service attacks as their primary weapon for disrupting targeted entities.

The group commonly targets Ukrainian news websites but transitioned into attacking NATO-related assets. One of its most notorious campaigns is the attacks against the Ukrainian news and media websites Zaxid and Fakty UA in March last year.

Earlier this month, researchers spotted that the alleged hacktivist group started targeting the websites of the candidates for the Czech presidential election next year.

Currently, NoName057(16) uses Telegram to claim attacks, mock targets, extort victims, and justify its malicious activities. Experts explained that the group’s Telegram channel expresses that everyone should recognise them since they have successfully executed their attacks.

Some researchers also claimed that the group badly needed publicity to establish that they were a severe threat to anyone.

NoName057(16) has also abused GitHub as the primary platform for illegal actions, including hosting its DDoS site. Furthermore, the pro-Russian group utilises GitHub repositories to store the late versions of their toolset.

This hacktivist group is a cybercriminal organisation that recently emerged during the geopolitical crisis between Russia and Ukraine. The group could cause temporary service disruptions despite being an unsophisticated threat group.

Therefore, volunteer-based attacks have joined the conflict between the two countries. Most of the attackers have included payments as a reward for their influential contributions and impact on the war. Experts claimed that there will be more group to emerge soon as the conflict still worsens up to this day.
