Red Barrels Video Game Developer Outlast Cyberattack Cybersecurity Incident

The Canadian video game developer Red Barrels disclosed that a cyberattack had prompted them to postpone developing its Outlast games. Reports revealed the cyberattack has compromised the company’s IT systems and data.

This discovery confirmed that the attack compromised the games’ production timeline, but the company assured its users that it did not compromise user information.

Additionally, Red Barrels stated that it regrets to inform its users that its internal IT systems were recently compromised by a cybersecurity incident involving access to some of its data.

Red Barrels has collaborated with relevant parties to address the cybersecurity incident.

Red Barrels explained that they executed security steps to protect their systems and stored information as soon as they discovered the incident. The game developers employed a third-party security provider to help them thoroughly investigate the attack.

Additionally, the company notified the appropriate authorities and stakeholders who may have been affected by the event. They offered their employees the necessary assistance against the attack as preventive measures.

Red Barrels is a gaming organisation created in 2011 by industry veterans who have worked on award-winning games, such as Assassin’s Creed, Prince of Persia, and Splinter Cell.

Still, the Outlast series is the game that made Red Barrels one of the most prominent game developers in the industry this year. The Outlast Trials was released in March 2024, and the Red Barrels company specifically introduced it as its primary product this year.

The team teased Outlast 3, implying they were already working on the next instalment. While no release date has been set, recent events will impact the development schedule. The impact on the company’s development timetable has been tremendous. Still, it assured everyone they would do their best to stick to the plan, but some items must be delayed.

Lastly, the gaming studio claims its investigation into the event has concluded, the breach has been addressed, and it will continue to deploy security measures to secure its players’ and internal data.

However, it is still a mystery how the hackers who executed the attack seized game source code or other assets linked to prospective projects. The attack could still harm the company once the potential impact is disclosed to the public.
