Frontier Communications informs 750,000 customers that their personal information was compromised in an exposure following a data breach incident last April, which the RansomHub ransomware organisation claimed.

Based on reports, a cyberattack against the company occurred in mid-April 2024. This campaign allowed the hackers to access users’ personal information on its networks.

The types of data exposed in this cybercriminal activity were censored in a sample notice filed to the Office of the Maine Attorney General. However, full names and Social Security Numbers (SSNs) were validated as breached for approximately 750,000 customers.

Frontier insisted that the alleged RansomHub ransomware attack did not endanger consumer financial information.

Frontier said it has contacted relevant law enforcement agencies and regulatory authorities about the security issue and has taken extra steps to fortify its network security. In addition, the company revealed that it is conducting an ongoing investigation into the impact of the incident.

The company also included instructions on enrolling in their one-year complimentary credit monitoring and identity theft services in the notification letters. Also, they urge the impacted clients to register for their offer immediately to avoid unwanted conflicts.

While Frontier did not provide details about the incident in its notification, it still revealed that it was forced to take down part of its systems to isolate the attack and prevent it from spreading to other network devices.

Still, numerous users also reported that their Internet connection had gone down during the attack, and support phone calls played taped messages rather than redirecting to a live operator.

On the other hand, these data breach warnings follow the extortion setup of RansomHub’s admission of responsibility for the Frontier hack earlier this week.

Additionally, RansomHub added Frontier Communications to its dark web extortion platform, threatening to disclose 5GB of data allegedly taken during the attack. The stolen data purportedly included the personal information of 2 million subscribers.

A redacted screenshot has also confirmed the existence of various customer information in the leak, such as complete name, date of birth, physical address, social security number, email address, subscription status, and service notes.

As of now, the threat actors have given Frontier until June 14 to reply to their demands, or it will sell the database to the highest bidder.
