As the UAE prepares to host the highly-regarded COP28 event, it grapples with an unprecedented surge in cyber threats. Anonymous, a prominent hacktivist group, has joined forces with pro-Palestine organisations to escalate their #OPUAE campaign, singling out UAE institutions in a series of attacks.

The affected organisations include the Higher Colleges of Technology, Federal Authority for Human Resources, Emirates News Agency, Ministry of Economy, UAE Pass, and Ministry of Justice. These entities have become prime targets in the ongoing cyber offensive, leaving UAE authorities and cybersecurity experts deeply concerned.

The affected organisations are apprehensive about the potential for a significant cyber assault, similar to the Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks that afflicted India during the G20 Summit last September. In response to these escalating threats, UAE authorities and organisations are implementing comprehensive measures to safeguard the nation’s digital infrastructure.

The need for enhanced cybersecurity measures is not limited to the upcoming COP28 event; it extends to the long-term protection of critical assets in the UAE.

To address these challenges effectively, UAE organisations must focus on several key areas, including a comprehensive review of existing cybersecurity measures, cybersecurity awareness training for employees, network monitoring, development of a strong incident response plan, and active collaboration with law enforcement agencies to work together in investigating and mitigating cyber attacks.

The UAE government and its institutions are diligently working to ensure the nation’s digital resilience. The ongoing #OPUAE campaign highlights the necessity of enhancing cybersecurity capabilities and proactive measures to protect sensitive information, critical infrastructure, and the overall security of the UAE.

By taking these precautionary steps and working closely with cybersecurity experts, UAE organisations are strengthening their defences, thereby minimising the risk of falling victim to cyber-attacks.

As the COP28 event approaches, the nation stands resolute in its commitment to hosting a secure and successful international gathering, fortified by a heightened sense of vigilance and preparedness in a time when cybersecurity is vital.
