Publishing Firm Macmillan System Shutsdown Ransomware Cyberattack Service Interruption

Macmillan, a publishing firm, had recently been hit by a ransomware attack and reports recovering from it since they could not process electronic orders due to the incident. Until now, the culprit of the ransomware incident is still unidentified.

Moreover, the cyberattack on the firm caused a temporary closure of their office and system operations. Some of Macmillan’s staff had posted on Twitter to announce the incident to their users and let them know that the firm is working on getting back on service as soon as possible.

From a report, the publishing firm explained that taking their systems offline was required to prevent further impact to their network caused by the cyberattack.

As detailed by a Macmillan representative, the threat actors had encrypted some important files inside their network. The publishing firm also added that they have teamed up with cybersecurity experts to investigate the issue that can help them understand its impact, improve their security measures, and restore their operations to full functionality at the closest time.

Nevertheless, some of the firm’s systems are in the process of being returned online since a few were only shut down as a safety precaution.

The ransomware attack on Macmillan had made its employees unable to access emails, files, and company systems. Aside from the staff, many customers of the publishing firm had also reached out to them about not being able to process, receive, place, or ship their orders.

Threat actors seemed interested in targeting publishing or library service companies. Last April, a report was also announced about the LockBit ransomware group striking a German library service Onleihe. Onleihe is a service that aids its clients in renting e-books, magazines, audiobooks, e-newspapers, and music across various European countries. The ransomware attack impacted the online library service’s hosted sites and other sensitive company data.

Based on the last updates on Onleihe’s situation, LockBit claimed the attack against them and posted the company’s database on their leak site after refusing to cooperate with the ransom negotiation.
