Recent reports revealed a data breach against Panasonic, a Japanese multinational corporation and electronics giant, that compromised their data stored on a file server as the unknown threat actors have managed to access their systems.
A press release by Panasonic confirmed that their network had been illegally accessed by unknown third-party threat actors last November 11, 2021. The threat actors managed to access their file server and networks according to their security team’s investigation about the incident. Nonetheless, the electronics giant added that they have immediately reached out to appropriate authorities to help them with the issue and have taken actions to prevent similar cases of cyberattacks against their company in the future.
The electronics giant sought the help of security teams to investigate the data breach incident and look for other data that could have been compromised during the intrusion, such as their customers’ and clients’ details.
Panasonic added that despite implementing their internal investigation, they decided to work with third-party cybersecurity specialists to further investigate the data breach and leak and verify if the incident has also compromised their clients’ sensitive information related to their social infrastructure.
From the press release, the electronics giant has also sent their sincerest apologies to their clients, customers, and affiliates that may have been involved and affected coming from the data breach incident.
Back in June 2021, Panasonic’s servers have also been hacked. Their recent press release did not include any details about the previous incident but some Japanese broadcasting firms, such as NHK and Mainichi, stated that the threat actors involved in it had accessed the servers of Panasonic between June and November.
The recent data breach attack was also said to have compromised customers’ and employees’ data before the electronics giant noticed being cyber attacked last November 11.
Based on observations of security experts, the attack against Panasonic could only be a part of a wider cyberattack series targeting Japanese firms and organisations. Other giant Japanese companies have also been attacked with data breaches and leaks, including Mitsubishi Electric, Kawasaki, NEC, and Kobe Steel and Pasco.
