A big-time defence company, Elbit Systems of America, revealed that they had experienced a data breach incident. The Black Basta ransomware operators were the alleged culprit after the group claimed to hack the firm.
The group added the affected company’s name to its leak site. The company has confirmed the hacking group’s claim after indicating that it took place in June this year and allegedly impacted more than 350 individuals.
According to the company, they have identified the intrusion after noticing peculiar behaviour in its network. Fortunately, the company immediately shut down some parts of its systems to prevent attacks from spreading across the network.
The company then launched an investigation to dissect the latest incident at the firm, revealing that the threat actors may have obtained some of the employees’ data without authorisation.
The defence form then confirmed that they had notified all the affected employees regarding the possible effects of the attack last July. Four of the Maine residents were also informed by the company.
Elbit Systems of America admitted that the attackers stole troves of data from their network.
The exposed data on the Elbit Systems of America may have included names, Social Security numbers, dates of birth, ethnicity, gender, direct deposit information, addresses, email addresses, and more.
Additionally, the company assured all impacted individuals that they are eligible to claim a 12-month free identity protection and credit monitoring services. This free protection program could help the affected individuals protect themselves from identity theft attacks while the company resolves the problem.
The Black Basta ransomware group then posted proof of the breach by revealing some of the company’s audit report, payroll report, and agreements. The ransomware group has been active since last April and employs a double-extortion tactic model for attacks.
Researchers noted that the ransomware has a [.]basta extension to the encrypted filenames and creates ransom notes dubbed readme[.]txt for every folder.
