Amedia, one of Norway’s most significant local news publishers, has recently suffered a catastrophic cyberattack that caused their central computer systems to shut down.

The cyberattack incident prevented the company from printing the newest edition of its daily physical newspapers. They explained that their press activities would be postponed until their security team resolved the issue from a statement.

According to Amedia’s vice president, the cyber attack impacted their company’s advertisement and subscription systems, preventing promoters from acquiring new ads and obstructing subscribers from ordering or stopping subscriptions.

However, the news publishing firm revealed that it is still unknown whether the hackers have stolen personal information and got their hands on the subscription system since it contained essential credentials such as names, addresses, customers’ subscription history, and phone numbers.

Fortunately, details like passwords, financial information, and read histories are not affected because it is not included inside the subscription systems’ storage of Amedia.

Amedia can publish over 90 newspapers that reach approximately 2 million Norwegians. This cyberattack is the third time Norway’s major companies have been attacked recently.

A statement released on their website expressed that they are in the stage of obtaining a broad overview of the incident. However, the news publisher firm does not know the full effect of the attack yet and said that they have already deployed comprehensive measures to mitigate the damage and return their regular operation as soon as possible.

Last December, one of Norway’s most prominent food producers, Nortura, revealed that they had to shut down their entire IT systems after suffering a cyberattack at their factories. The food producer firm stated that they are currently investigating the incident with the help of law enforcement.

Threat actors heavily targeted Norway’s major organisations. Therefore, every company within Norway’s territory must enhance its standards in terms of cybersecurity to avoid getting picked on by cybercriminals.
