An Anonymous affiliated hacking group claimed that they had completed an attack against the Belarusian government websites. The group commenced the attack after the latter announced their support for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The hacktivist group announced on Twitter that various websites linked to the Belarus state are shut down because of them. They shared a screenshot on the social media website indicating that they have compromised several government sectors, including the economic, communications, and justice.

The group also took down the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the State Committee, the National Legal Information Center, and the Ministry of Education websites. The massive attack conducted by the Anonymous group against the Belarusian government was instigated by their complicity in the invasion of Ukraine. The tweet also added that most of Belarus’ biggest websites are now offline.

During this geopolitical conflict, the Anonymous hacktivist group is the most active threat group against the Russian government.

Researchers noticed that the Anonymous group had been the most active and vocal regarding their opposition to Russia and their plans to invade Ukraine. The hacktivist group reportedly compromised the Russian state TV channels to broadcast live streams from the Ukrainian lines during the start of the invasion.

However, the group also announced that the Belarus government websites were brought by their team back online when they wrote their announcement. Still, they reassured that they would do it again if they deemed it necessary.

The group was urged by the recent activity of the hackers to attack the mentioned government after the Ghostwriter threat group (Belarus-backed hacking gang) was suspected by researchers operated a phishing campaign against European governments last February. The APT group also attempted to manage an influx of Ukrainian refugees, which heightened their conflict against Anonymous.

Researchers never proved the linkage of Ghostwriter Group to Belarus’ government. However, there are still more reasons behind Anonymous’ claims since Belarus enabled the Russian Forces to assemble on its borders before attacking Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine. The Belarusian government also aided the Russian troops with medical support during their attacks.

Anonymous’ campaign against the Russian government has urged many to follow in their footsteps. Last March, Czech Republic’s cybersecurity company Avast stopped their sale and marketing in Russia.
